The fishing around Mariato, Panama in January 2004 was very good. Billy Quiros (Alex's former boss) and Jim Tryon started our year off, fishing with us on 3 January in the Magoo. The Solunar calendar had predicted a poor day of fishing but Billy and Jim proved the prediction wrong. There was no bait but the rods stayed bent and lines tight all day with Yellow-fin Tuna and Wahoo. Last count was over 40 Tuna and one Wahoo, several other Wahoo were released prematurely for a future catch.
Alex's mom, Mary Lynch, and sister, Terry Helkenns along with several family members and friends stayed and fished with Alex on 7 January while visiting Panama. They took a short boat ride to Isla Cebaco, went fishing for about an hour and caught 5 Yellow-fin Tuna for dinner. Pictures of their Panama excursion can be found at: Mary & Terry's Visit to Panama
Arthur Clark & Carl Legore from Colorado. went fishing with us in the Magoo for three days, 20-22 January. Tom took them fishing the first day, starting in close near Isla Cebaco looking for baits. There were no traditional baits to be seen on the surface or on the sounder so they trolled deep offshore, fishing in unseasonably calm, warm and deep blue Panama waters. The first day produced over a dozen Yellow-fin Tuna, Dorado, Amberjack and countless Bonitos. Alex took them out fishing the second day following the same general route at the day before. The catch was mostly Bonito with a few Tuna and Amberjack. Tom took them out fishing their final day off the end of the Azuero Peninsula. Their final day was very good with plenty of Yellow-fin Tuna, big Amberjack and a big Pacific Sailfish that we quickly released after posing for several pictures.
