After early May 2005, we had no guests at the lodge until Terry & Ed Helkenn's (Alex's sister and brother-in-law) short visit at the end of December. The blue water was close into shore as was the non-stop Tuna bite with an occasional Wahoo. Ed also encountered schools of Dorado in the 20-25 pound range fishing further offshore. We had two short notice visits in January 2006, first in the second week of January, by Mark Blair from NYC and his friend Brendon, a fly-fishing guide also from New York. Mark was on a whirl wind fishing expedition through South and Central America. Mark & Brendon fished mostly with poppers and fly. Baits were plentiful but hard to catch and unproductive. The bite near shore was very slow with lots of surface activity but very few strikes. Offshore they raised several Sailfish and Dorado on hook-less teasers for the fly but only hooked a Dorado. The Tuna were abundant both near and offshore but they would not take a popper, fly or jig but could be caught trolling Repalas. Finally, Bill and Cynthia Johnson from Huston, Texas visited the end of January for a day of fishing. Popping and Live bate fishing was unproductive but they did well jigging with light tackle. In addition to catching yellow snapper, rainbow runner, yellow fin tuna and Pompano, Cynthia caught a very nice Roosterfish on a jig. This was Cynthia's first time out salt water sportfishing.
